Sarah Wells the superhero working in an office |
The opening
scene introduces the main character who is the superhero in the movie and this
is similar to other superhero films for example, in 'Spider Man' the superhero,
known as Peter Parker is introduced in the opening sequence. The one key thing
that distinguishes our movie from the typical superhero movies is that the
superhero in our film is a female, rather than the male gender which most films
in the superhero genre tend to use. Our opening sequence has similarities to
other films in this genre as we used a variety of shots from different angles
and distances focusing on the key character in the movie. Furthermore, the
acting in our opening sequence has been
done to a professional standard to emphasise the emotional feeling the
superhero is going through , this was a challenging subject to portray in the
opening sequence as there was very little dialogue in the sequence .Furthermore
, we have challenged our genre by using
a female superhero , we did this to challenge the stereotypes of women which
occur in common male dominated superhero films ;women are usually portrayed as
the vulnerable characters .Moving on , our film is low hearted in the sense
that it relates to social issues that are present in today’s society such as single mums who have a lot of things
to handle independently .In addition our
movie is a low hearted movie, the purpose of making a low hearted film was to
relate it to a real world situation , so that it would connect with the target
audience .Moreover it differentiates our movie from the majority of superhero
movies which tend to be unrealistic .The superhero in our film main aim is to
fight for herself and to get justice
from the villains, whereas most superheroes aims are to protect society from villains e.g.
‘Superman’ and this is what challenges this superhero genre. The main purpose
of this is to attract a wider range of audiences that like to watch films that
have a have a strong meaning behind it and can also relate to them, and those
who are bored with the typical superhero film.

The media institution that would be most appropriate for our
films distribution would be Universal mainly because they have continuous
worldwide success and they have the required budget that our film needs to be
distributed .It has distributed the worldwide successful superhero movies such
as ‘Hell Boy 2’ ,‘The Incredible Hulk ‘, ‘Kickass’ and many more , moreover
Universal would get our film worldwide recognition having distributed some
films to thousands of cinemas across the globe including some of the films listed above .Moreover it has a
resort in Orlando and this emphasises the success this company has in
developing movies beyond cinemas , the Orlando resort features a Harry Potter
themed world. Our product would preferably be distributed internationally
because it is aimed at a varied audience due to the following:
·
Our film covers present social issues such as
children who have witnessed crime and the effects it has had on them throughout
their lives.
·
It has a romance element to it Sarah Wells will
fall in love , this attracts a female audience
·
It has a number of conflicts which the superhero
has to overcome
·
It challenges the stereotypical superhero e.g. a
strong , middle- aged, male
·
It is different in the way that the superhero
gains powers throughout her journey, rather than gaining them through an
occurrence e.g. Hulk who gets his superhuman strength from an experiment which
went wrong.
The best way of
distributing our opening sequence would be through the TV because there is
a wide range of audience and it would attract the
attention of many people worldwide.Furthermore the other reason why I thought the TV would be
the best way of distributing our opening sequence was mainly the concept that
in the present time , not many people go to the cinema as they watch TV; piracy
and web links to free access to movies
have been the main cause of this and has been a huge downfall factor of the
success of any film.

Moving on, our chosen demographic group is the teenage age
group e.g. 13-19 due this being the typical age group that watches superhero
movies as the genre is based on fantasies, this will connect to them more than
it would to an elderly audience as they have the view point that these fantasies
are just plain ordinary fantasies, and has nothing in common with the real world.
Nevertheless the film would possibly attract an audience of 19+ years because
some of the issues reflected in this film connects with the older audiences e.g.
a lonely working woman who is caught up with a nasty surprise from the past e.g.
finding out about the mystery of the coin. In addition our film would attract
the female and make gender because it has the romance element which will
attract the female majority and the action element which will attract the male majority.
The purpose of our opening sequence was to attract a variety of audiences
because our film is not strictly an action based film which most superhero
films have the tendency to have. . Moreover our film would also attract many
ethnicity's as the problems that Sarah Wells is faced with represents problems
which are present in all ethnicity's such as, family issues involving the loss
of family members, bad memories such as
scenes of violence which is shown where Sarah Wells’ single mother is shot by some
villains and as a result left Sarah Wells in adoption any many more current
issues which people are faced with in today’s society.Moving on ,the social class that our films would attract is a middle / working class audience because the main character Sarah Wells represents the working class in the office scene where she is doing some paperwork and through the typical office wear .Moreover when she goes back to the house it shows that she is not from a rich background as the house is a normal sized house and not a fancy mansion, which would be used to represent someone from a rich background. Also our audience would have a keen interest in the whole superhero genre and would attract those who like to see new modernised superhero movies , which i would say ours is as the superhero is female and she has to find the powers along her journey rather than having them from the day she was born. This difference would attract a wider audience..

Furthermore, we used mise- en –scene frequently throughout
our sequence to engage the audience. We used costumes such as typical office wear,
a scarf, props such as a radio to relate everyday objects which humans consume, for performance
we used a variety of facial expressions such as a shocked face and a speech
with a motive towards the end to convey the key motivation of the superhero. The final part of mise-en-scene, the
setting of our film is mainly in an office scene and a house scene this was to
create a realistic scene in our opening sequence. Moreover we had posotive and negative feedback from showing the clip to several people. Some of the posotice ones was that they liked the varied shots and angles used as they found it interested them more , this can be scene from the photos above and below. One person in particular liked the use of a soundtrack , we used Ellie Goulding's -Your Song and this is what attracted this person the most. Also one person in particular loved the acting which was done by a colleague. However the negative point was that too many shots caused confusion and didn't help the person to understand the story, one person found the flash back confusing and this didn't keep them entertained.Overall the feedback kept the majority of the audience entertained as the majority gave more posotive feedback than negative.
From filming this sequence I have gained skills such as
keeping a steady hand, how to use the camera and how to connect it to a tripod,
I have also gained the skills to know where to position myself in order to get
varied shots throughout my opening sequence, to keep the audience
engaged. Therefore editing was a key part in making the finishing product in a
professional condition using the features of sound effects and various
transitions etc. .I had worked together with my group members in order to work
together to use the iMacs for editing and I asked for help when needed, this
helped to keep the editing to be done at a steady pace. I have gained a lot of
skills in production since the start of the course, I have learnt that the key
to success for filming the opening sequence is to get the opinions of your
group members and teachers in order to make the sequence successful.
Furthermore, I have gained an understanding of why thoroughly planning via a
story board is vital in order for the opening sequence filming and editing to
run efficiently and smoothly. Although, I need to improve on keeping by zooming
in, at a steady pace so that there is a good balance in the opening sequence to
avoid the scenes being jumpy, for example when I was filming the long distance
shot where Sarah Wells returns to the house, the zooming in is not done in a
constant pace and therefore does not look professional. Also when I filmed the
tilt shot at right at the beginning in the office scene the tripod handle was a
bit stiff, and as a result caused a jumpy motion therefore when it came to
editing I had to carefully cut out the jumpy bits .In addition if I improved on
these camera skills it would save me a lot of time as I would not have to keep
constantly re-filming scenes. In order to meet these targets I would have many
trials before the actual filming for my coursework starts.

Although , I have definitely improved in planning and preparing
for the film shooting, this has
benefited the process in which filming my opening scene as it has made it more
effective than the prelim task was (‘Four Weddings And A Funeral’) .When we
filmed for this prelim task my
group struggled using the cameras because we encountered issues that were : not
being able to keep the camera at a steady pace , struggling to find where to position ourselves to get different
shots at different angles and many
more. Now we have developed the skills
to make consistent and flowing scenes with the use of variety of shots and distances
in our opening sequence. Furthermore we did not plan at all for the prelim task
where as we thoroughly planned with plenty of detail for our opening sequence. In regards to the quality of the footage I
would say my group worked hard to make sure that we included various shots and
angles and distances to keep our opening sequence interesting. Also our positioning
has improved a lot when we filmed at different angles and distances and this
can be seen in the opening sequence as there is evidence that we approached
shots from different angles and position to engage our audience. Furthermore, we
have improved the quality of the piece through editing, we did this by using
various sound effects, and transitions to keep the film flowing and interesting.
Further on we added a sound track to keep the audience engaged and to relate to
the feelings of the character and the tone of the opening sequence.
Secondary Research:
1) ‘The Dark Knight’ has been successful in
attracting audiences; this is due to the careful thought out process of the
production of the film from the actors used to the release date. Firstly ‘The
Dark Knight’ used well-known actors/
actresses e.g. Christian Bale , Heath
Ledger , Morgan Freeman ,Monique Gabriela Curnen etc. to star in the film , and this aspect of the film generates a larger audience and is
one of the main selling points in the film industry .For example films such as
‘The Longest Yard ‘ which uses celebrity stars in the movie e.g. Nelly , a well-known RnB singer and ‘The
Great Khali’ Known for W.W.E ( American
wrestling show) attracts a wider audience ,which have different interests and hobbies. In addition the
release date of ‘The Dark Knight’ was
18/07/08 and this shows me the film was released during the start of the summer
holidays .The purpose of this was to attract the target audience of this film
to come to the cinema and watch the movie , the release date itself shows the
importance it has to the gross .For example, ‘The Dark Knight’ bagged a huge $158,411,483
in the opening weekend whereas ‘‘Batman Begins ‘’ made $48,745,440 due the fact
it was released on 15/06/05 in my opinion this
date was not suitable to match the intended target audience .Due to the
date being in the middle of the school exam
period and the target audience have other priorities in mind therefore the
gross for the film may drop . This emphasises the importance the
release date has on the gross picked up in the opening weekend.
Furthermore,
the story line also interests the audience; the whole aspect of a superhero
fantasy instantly connects with the audience and makes them imagine themselves
to be living this fantasy world. This is done by the use of mise-en-scene e.g.
the costuming; the bat theme in ‘The Dark Knight’ connects to the real world,
because it has that realism to it which the audience can relate to.

Moreover Iron Man 2 has also been successful in attracting an audience,
the audiences has the interests mentioned above .The age group which is most
attracted to this film is 13 -30 however due to the following reasons the movie
cannot extend to a younger audience as there are some scenes of :
·
Violence
·
Inappropriate language
·
Costuming being revealing
The audience will also
be attracted with the casting used in the film names such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert Downey JR. catches the audience’s attention and develops
into a huge selling point for the film. The institution used for this film was
Paramount and the reason why the production team chose to use this was because
Paramount is a worldwide success and has supported the most successful films in
the world such as James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’
and ‘Transformers’ .Therefore the institution is well known for making films such as the ones
listed above and this is one of the main reasons why Paramount brings success to films such as ‘Iron Man’
.Furthermore people who may be
interested in this may already have a keen interest on the Iron Man sequels e.g.
they may have seen ‘Iron Man’ (first movie) and this makes them want to watch
the second one if the first one interested them
and ‘word of mouth’ may attract them to watch it.

‘Batman Begins' was also successful in
attracting an audience this may be because the audience has an interest in the
batman sequels and they are a huge fan of Batman and have collectables such as
collecting action figures , playing batman video games etc. The age group that
may be interested in ‘Batman Begins ‘ is
8 -30 year olds because it is the typical audience for most superhero movies
and they share the same interests and hobbies such as watching superhero
cartoons , and love superhero films in general.
The
institution that ‘Batman Begins ‘ used was Warner Brothers this is due to the
world wide success they have and the money they can put into make a spectacular
film that meets the requirements of such a high-tech film .Nevertheless they
are great for distributing as they have money to support them throughout
marketing processes etc. They have the resources to provide the production team
throughout the process of making the film.
2) 'The
amazing Spider Man' (3D) attracts a wide range of
audience, coming from different ethical backgrounds, ages, genders etc. However
the main audience that this film will attract is teenagers because they tend to
like this type of superhero film, because they usually consist of well-known
actors, actresses and the stories are based on school life and the topic that
always tends to rise up is about bullying. Furthermore the age range that this
movie will attract is 8-30 because the movie itself has a number of conflicts
occurring in it and this emphasises on the fact that it is a superhero movie.
Income of the audience can be a factor that can affect the profits of a movie
due to the majority of the audience being unemployed teenagers who are not
financially stable on their own and this
has an impact on how successful the film will be because it may mean less
people will be able to afford to watch the film , moreover due to the film
being in 3D there is an extra cost aspect and this can be off-putting to the
audience .Furthermore the release date 02/05/14 and due the date lying on the
busy exam time for the target audience this may have a huge impact on the gross
in the opening month or so .Moreover the film will presumably attract both the
female and male gender as ‘Spider Man’ is quite an emotional film that revolves
around issues we are faced with in todays society.

The article believes ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ , ‘The avengers’ and ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ will be successful in finding audiences ‘three big superhero movies’ the writer refers to the movies as being ‘big’ and this emphasises that these movies will instantly have a potential audience which will bring success for the films .firstly for the main reason that all three films are going to be released in the summer ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ ‘(openings July 20), ‘The Avengers (opening May 4). and finally ‘The Amazing Spider man (July 3) .The writer mentions ‘The Dark Night Rises’ ‘is coming into the summer with a HUGE advantage being the sequel to a $533 million grossing movie’ this conveys that the gross a movie picks up reveals the success they have had with gathering an audience.Morover the success in finding and audience is also down to the careful planning of the production of the film we can see this when the writer mentions ‘The Avengers’ ‘culmination of years of planning’ this conveys that planning is key and can make or break a film. Nevertheless, the writer has stated that the Spider Man franchise has set the standards high of picking up ‘$100million plus ‘ for opening superhero movies. This elaborates on the writers believe that the three movies will have success in gathering an audience. Furthermore the total gross picked up for ‘The Dark Knight’ shows how successful some films can be ‘It grossed $400million , which at the time was “Star Wars” type money’ this shows that new modernised films such as ‘The Dark Knight’ can break those barriers and can show a competitive side to the film industry.

2)
Star actors and star
directors are vital in helping superhero films to be successful ‘ The movies
feature some of Hollywood’s biggest names , such as Nicolas Cage ,Scarlett
Johansson , Will Smith and Robert Downey Jnr’ , suggesting that they are the
biggest selling points of these movies and will attract a worldwide audience.
Therefore the gross that will be picked up will be reaching the millions or
even billions! Furthermore not only do the movies have big Hollywood Actors
/Actresses it also has well –known British actors starring in the film, the
article refers to ‘Belfast actor Ciarรกn Hinds, Welshman Rhys Ifans and
Londoners Tom Hiddleston, Tom Hardy and director Christopher Nolan ‘and this
suggests that these films will have a variety of actors / actresses from
America and England therefore this will create a larger audience and will complement
the films’ success.
